Delhi Police foils ISIS-inspired terror plot; two operatives held for planning attack on prominent mall, public park
New Delhi: A significant counter-terror operation has come to light in Delhi, where the Delhi Police Special Cell on Friday nabbed two ISIS operatives. As per the police, these two were allegedly planning to carry out a terror attack in crowded places during Diwali.
What Did Delhi’s Additional Commissioner (Special Cell) Say?
Additional Commissioner of Police (CP) Special Cell Pramod Kushwaha informed that the accused were in constant contact with a foreign handler who was giving them instructions for the terror attack. The handler is suspected to be operating from the Syria-Turkey border. Both the suspected terrorists scanned several crowded areas like South Delhi and were preparing for the attack.
How Police Foiled ISIS-inspired Terror Plot?
During the operation, a team of police seized electronic items like – a laptop, several pen drives, incriminating videos, and ISIS propaganda material. Cops also recovered a wristwatch, which is suspected to be used in making an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
According to police, one of the accused was nabbed last year for issuing a death threat to a person on social media. He was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh ATS.
He was reportedly handling media-related work for the terror group. The second accused was arrested from Sadik Nagar on October 16. His father works as a government employee.
What Does Preliminary Investigation Reveal?
Preliminary probe revealed that both the accused were using several Instagram accounts. They were using these accounts to spread extremist content. These accounts were also used to communicate with the handlers.
Who Led The Operation?
Inspector Sunil and Inspector Dhiraj led the operation under the guidance of senior officers of the Special Cell.
