Odisha govt approves direct recruitment of 4,219 constables

In a significant step to bolster the state’s policing strength, the Odisha government on Friday granted approval for the direct recruitment of 4,219 constables in the Odisha Police. The decision aims to address long-standing manpower shortages and enhance law enforcement efficiency across the state.

According to a letter issued by the Home Department, the proposal submitted by the State Police Headquarters in Cuttack received government approval after a detailed review and consideration. The recruitment process will be conducted in strict compliance with the relevant statutory rules and recruitment norms, ensuring a fair and transparent selection process.

Deputy Secretary Tarun Kumar Panda, in his communication to the Director General and Inspector General of Police, emphasised that all procedures and norms outlined in the recruitment rules must be meticulously followed.

The process will also adhere to the state’s reservation policy and the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) issued by the General Administration and Public Grievance Department on 22 September 2025.

Officials said the large-scale recruitment is expected to significantly strengthen the Odisha Police force, improving the government’s capacity to maintain law and order, respond to emergencies, and ensure public safety across urban and rural areas alike.

The DG and IG of Police have been instructed to take immediate steps to initiate the recruitment process, ensuring that all procedural requirements are fully complied with. Authorities have also assured that the recruitment will be carried out with full transparency and fairness, providing opportunities for eligible candidates while adhering to legal and policy frameworks.
