Exactly a month after the deadly stampede in Karur, actor-politician Vijay is meeting the families of the victims at a private hotel in Mahabalipuram near Chennai.
According to reports, Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) arranged the meeting at the resort where the party had booked 50 rooms to enable him to personally meet the bereaved families and convey his condolences.
As many as 41 people lost their lives, and over 60 others were injured in the stampede that occurred at the TVK meeting addressed by Vijay on September 27. The mishap occurred after the crowd swelled beyond expectation and surged uncontrollably upon the actor's arrival.
The TVK has transferred Rs 20 lakh as relief assistance to the families of those who died in the stampede.
The meeting at the Mahabalipuram resort has also sparked a social media debate with some users criticising the actor for arranging travel and accommodation for the meeting of the affected families, whereas he could have visited Karur and consoled them.
The TVK, however, claimed that Vijay could not travel to Karur as he didn’t get permission from the authorities.
The meeting comes days after the Supreme Court ordered a CBI probe into the tragic incident and appointed a three-member monitoring committee to oversee the investigation.
The TVK had approached the top court against a Madras High Court order constituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the stampede.
