Ahead of the meeting, Trump had rattled Japanese officials with tariffs and open provocations that Japan should pay more for the presence of American troops in that country. But the meeting went off smoothly, better than both sides had expected. The leaders signed two agreements — one declaring a “new golden age of the US-Japan alliance,” and another to cooperate on expanding the supply chain for rare earth metals.
