Weather today: IMD forecast heavy rain, strong winds for October 30, 31 amidst weakening Cyclone Montha

The Cyclone Montha has weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over east Vidarbha  and adjoining south Chhattisgarh at 05:30 am on Thursday, according to the latest alert by the Indian Meterological Department. It is likely to move northwards towards East Madhya Pradesh & adjoining north Chhattisgarh and weaken into a low-pressure area during the next 24 hours.

Under its influence, extremely heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Sub-Himalayan, West Bengal, Bihar, Sikkim, Saurashtra, and Kutch on October 30 and 31.

As per reports, heavy rainfall is expected at isolated places over South Peninsular India, including Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Rayalaseema, Mahe, north interior Karnataka, Yanam, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep on Thursday and Friday, with isolated thunderstorms likely at many places.

In Eastern and Central India, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in Odisha, the Gangetic plains of Bihar, Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, the Western Gangetic region, eastern and western Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Sikkim on October 30 and 31. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also expected at isolated locations. Winds are  expected to blow at speeds of up to 40-50 kmph during this period.

Moderate to heavy rainfall can be expected at Gujarat, Central Maharashtra, Konkan, Goa, Saurashtra, Marathwada, and Kutch are expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated places on Thursday and Friday. Thunderstorms are also possible at some locations. Lightning is also possible in Maharashtra.

The Meteorological Department has issued a strong wind warning for the following areas:  Bay of Bengal, and the Andhra Pradesh coast, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Telangana, south Chhattisgarh and south interior Odisha, and the south Odisha coast, and north Tamil Nadu. These areas are expected to experience strong winds with a speed of 45 to 65 kmph.
