Vehicle’s KYV verification: If you drive and use a FASTag at toll plazas, this news is extremely important for you. After October 31st, if you don’t get a new Know Your Vehicle (KYV) verification done for your vehicle, your FASTag will be deactivated. This means you’ll have to pay the toll in cash again, which is twice the amount charged with a FASTag. The government claims this step is to increase transparency and prevent fraud, but ordinary people will now have to endure another process.
Until now, many people were using the same FASTag for different vehicles. Some even carried the tag in their pockets while crossing tolls, causing system glitches. Therefore, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has now made KYV mandatory. This means that each FASTag will now be linked to the vehicle for which it was issued. This will also ensure that FASTags meant for heavy vehicles are not used on smaller vehicles.
What is the KYV process like?
The KYV process is quite simple. Vehicle owners will need to provide their vehicle’s registration certificate (RC), an identity proof (such as Aadhaar, PAN, or passport), and, in some cases, upload a recent photograph. For some vehicles, front and side photographs may also be required, clearly showing the number plate and FASTag.
You can also perform this verification through your bank’s website or app, which issued the Fastag. Simply click on the Know Your Vehicle or Update KYV option, upload the documents, and complete the OTP verification. Once the process is complete, your tag will display as Active and Verified.
If a vehicle owner fails to complete the KYV, the Fastag will automatically deactivate, even if there is a balance remaining. There have been several recent complaints that vehicles are being stopped at toll plazas due to incomplete verification.
What does the government say, what do people think?
The government says that in the long run, KYV will streamline the system. It will make it easier to track stolen or sold vehicles. It will reduce incorrect toll collection and increase transparency in the entire digital toll system. This verification will remain valid until the vehicle’s ownership changes. If the vehicle is sold or a new registration number is issued, the KYV will need to be done again.
Many people believe this process is just another hassle, similar to KYC at banks. However, the truth is that if you don’t complete KYC, you’ll have to pay the toll tax in cash. Therefore, it’s best to complete this verification in time to avoid any disruptions to your journey.
