In an significant step toward closer military ties, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth have signed a new 10-year Defence Framework Agreement. The deal aims to strengthen strategic and security cooperation between India and the United States. The agreement was signed in Kuala Lumpur during the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting.

Hegseth announced the signing on social media, saying, “I just met Rajnath Singh to sign a 10-year U.S.-India Defence Framework. This will deepen our defence partnership, which is key to regional stability and security. We’re improving coordination, sharing information, and expanding technology cooperation. Our defence ties have never been stronger.”

After the signing, Rajnath Singh said that the agreement marks the beginning of a new chapter in India–U.S. relations. “We have spoken three times over the phone before, and I’m glad to finally meet you in person. I believe today’s signing will further strengthen the bond between our two countries,” he said.

What is the defence deal about?

The new India-US Defence Framework Agreement focuses on three main areas: strategic logistics, joint defence production, and technology sharing.

The agreement marks a major step toward countering China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific region. It will allow both countries’ armed forces to work together more smoothly, giving them access to each other’s military bases, logistics, and maintenance support.

Under the pact, India will gain long-term access to advanced US defence technologies. The deal also strengthens the overall security network in the Indo-Pacific, sending a clear message of unity against China’s aggressive actions in the South China Sea and Indian Ocean.

The framework will also help India expand its defence exports and promote innovation through joint research, development, and next-generation projects, especially in areas like drones and AI-driven warfare. It also enhances India’s position within the ASEAN security structure, making it a key player in regional peace and maritime cooperation.

This was the first in-person meeting between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth. Singh was earlier scheduled to visit Washington this month, but the trip was postponed because of tensions over U.S. tariffs on Indian goods.
