Ex-cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin takes oath in Telangana cabinet as minister | Watch video
Telangana: The former Indian cricket team captain and popular Congress leader, Mohammad Azharuddin, took oath as a minister in the cabinet of Telangana on Friday. This action has sparked debates, as the opposition has severely criticised his inclusion in the cabinet. Previously, the Raj Bhawan gave an official announcement stating that the cricketer would be taking the oath on the morning of Friday and that the oath-taking ceremony would take place in the presence of the governor, Jishnu Dev Varma.
Opposition’s remark on Azharuddin taking the oath
After the Congress leader took oath, the opposition shared its criticism. BJP’s Shashidhar Reddy mentioned that this attempt is nothing but an attempt to woo and garner the votes of a section of the voters in the upcoming Jubilee Hills by-election and a gross violation of the model code of conduct.
What’s the reply of TPCC?
At the remarks of Shashidhar Reddy, the spokesperson of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), Syed Nizamuddin, on Thursday, indicted Reddy’s party and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). The accusation aimed at the two’s integration to restrict the cricketer’s entry to the Telangana cabinet.
How can this move impact voting?
The inclusion of Azharuddin in the cabinet can prove to be an integral step in the Telangana Assembly elections. It’s because it has 119 legislators, with a Muslim population of more than one lakh in the Jubilee Hills by-poll, where the Congress party is struggling.

The nomination of Mohammad Azharuddin as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) was done in the last week of August under the Governor’s quota by the Telangana government. In addition, he was a contestant during the Jubilee Hills Assembly Polls in 2023, which he lost against Maganti Gopinath of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi.
