Baripada rice mill owner’s abduction: Four held, Rs 8 lakh seized

Four persons were arrested in connection with the abduction of a well-known rice mill owner from Baripada in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district on Saturday. Police also seized Rs 8 lakh in cash, firearms, a bike, and a car from the accused.

As per reports, the victim, Sunil Agrawal, a resident of the Station Bazar area in Baripada town, owns Kamdhenu Rice Mill in the Baishinga area. On his way to the mill, he was abducted at gunpoint by four individuals near Padmanabhpur on National Highway No. 18. The kidnappers held him captive and demanded a ransom of Rs 80 lakh.

According to reports, Sunil managed to inform his relatives and family members over the phone. Following this, his manager paid Rs 40 lakh to the abductors, after which he was released. The incident took place on October 23, and Sunil subsequently lodged a written complaint at Baishinga Police Station.

Police Form Special Team

Acting on the complaint, Mayurbhanj police formed a special team that successfully apprehended four kidnappers. The arrested persons are residents of areas under Balasore district, reportedly.

Further Investigation Underway

Mayurbhanj SP Varun Guntupalli said, “Our investigation revealed that the four main accused were from the Rupsa area of Balasore. It also came to light that an informant from Baripada had provided them with information that led to the abduction. We have discovered the involvement of five more individuals in the case and efforts are on to apprehend them soon.”
