Arun Matheshwaran's 'Bonnie & Clyde'? Lokesh Kanagaraj is Devadas, Wamiqa Gabbi Chandra in ‘DC’

On Saturday, Tamil film buffs were treated to a teaser announcing Lokesh Kanagaraj's full-fledged debut in front of the camera. The project was revealed as DC, helmed by Arun Matheshwaran, the filmmaker known for his blood-soaked action thrillers Captain Miller, Saani Kaayidham, and Rocky.

Lokesh is 'D' of the title, Devdas; Wamiqa Gabbi is presumably D's lover, Chandra, the 'C' of the title. Both names from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Devdas, adapted and reimagined multiple times, most notably, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas and Anurag Kashyap's Dev.D.

The original story revolves around a heartbroken alcoholic and a prostitute. Arun Matheshwaran's film is expected to be another reimagining of the source material as well as another violent entry in his filmography, if the visuals from the teaser are anything to go by.

Interestingly, in the first-look glimpse, we get a brief shot of a still from filmmaker Arthur Penn's 1967 film Bonnie & Clyde, one of the first films from the Hollywood New Wave movement that broke through with an unhinged, hitherto unseen approach to violence. The pathbreaking film starred Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway as the real-life outlaw couple who committed a series of crimes that immediately put them on the "public enemy" list in the 1930s.

So, naturally, the aforementioned still from the teaser hints at Matheshwaran's film being on similar lines — a possible combination of real-world and fictional inspirations?

Produced by Sun Pictures and scored by Anirudh, DC is currently in the middle of production. A release date announcement is awaited.

Once he wraps up DC, Kanagaraj is expected to start working on his directorials, firstly, the sequel to Kaithi, starring Karthi. The film is part of the Lokesh Kanagaraj Cinematic Universe (LCU), which comprises Kamal Haasan's Vikram and Vijay's Leo. Another spin-off, Rolex, starring Suriya, is also in the works.
