New Delhi: India’s long wait for a women’s cricket world title came to an end at the DY Patil Stadium, as Harmanpreet Kaur and her team clinched a 52-run victory over South Africa to secure their first ICC Women’s World Cup crown.
Shafali Verma played an impactful knock of 87 and Deepti Sharma delivered a superb showed all-round performance smashing a half-century and a five-wicket haul, to help India clinch a commanding victory in front of a packed crowd witnessing a landmark moment for women’s cricket.
The moment Deepti secured her five-wicket haul and sealed the win, celebrations erupted in the stadium.

Talking about the final clash, after being sent in to bat, India scored 298/7 in their 50 overs. Shafali’s brilliant 87 off 78 deliveries set the tone for the innings, while Deepti’s steady 58 and Richa Ghosh’s rapid 34 helped India push towards the 300-run mark.
Smriti Mandhana also scored 45, and captain Harmanpreet Kaur contributed 20 during a steady middle phase.
South Africa skipper Laura Wolvaardt kept the chase alive with a classy 101, but partners failed to stay with her.
Deepti Sharma’s spin made the difference, as she claimed 5 for 39, with Shafali adding two more. South Africa were dismissed for 246 in 45 overs.
