2000 Rupee Note: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has once again made a significant disclosure regarding ₹2000 notes. The RBI stated that ₹5,817 crore worth of ₹2000 notes are still in the possession of people or circulating in the market.
2000 Rupee Note: 2000 rupee notes are once again in the news across the country. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has released new data stating that even after almost a year and a half of demonetization, 2000 rupee notes worth ₹5,817 crore have not yet returned to circulation. This revelation comes at a time when most people had assumed that these notes had completely disappeared from the system.
In a statement released on Saturday, the RBI stated that when the withdrawal of 2000 rupee notes from circulation was announced on May 19, 2023, their total value was ₹3.56 lakh crore. Now, this has decreased to just ₹5,817 crore. This means that, according to the RBI, 98.37% of 2000 rupee notes have returned to the banking system.
2000 Rupee Note Still Valid
The RBI has clarified that 2000 rupee notes are still legal tender, meaning they can be accepted in any transaction. However, their printing has been discontinued and banks are no longer reissuing them. The central bank stated that these notes will be available for deposit or exchange at 19 RBI regional offices starting May 19, 2023. This facility will be made even easier for the public starting October 9, 2023. People can now deposit their 2000 rupee notes into their bank accounts by sending them to any RBI office via India Post. These offices are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.
Where could these notes be?
The RBI said it will periodically update the status of the return of 2,000 rupee notes. Experts say some notes may still be stuck in rural areas or cash-based businesses. Some people may also be holding onto them as souvenirs or collection items.
