Mirzapur train accident: Several feared dead after being hit by Netaji Express at Chunar Railway Station, CM Yogi expresses condolences
At least three passengers were killed on Wednesday after being hit by a train at Chunar Railway Station in Mirzapur district, Uttar Pradesh, officials said. The accident happened when passengers were getting off the Chopan Express on platform number four. As they got down, they were run over by the approaching Netaji Express, which was passing through the main line, said Amit Singh, Public Relations Officer of the North Central Railway (NCR) Prayagraj Division.
According to Indian Railways, the passengers got down on the wrong side of the train instead of using the Foot Over Bridge (FOB). “Train number 13309 (Chopan–Prayagraj Express) had arrived at platform four. Some passengers got down on the wrong side and started crossing the main track. At the same time, Train number 12311 (Netaji Express) came from the main line and ran over 3–4 passengers,” the statement said.
The identities of the deceased, said to be devotees, are yet to be confirmed.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and offered his condolences to the families of the victims. He has directed officials to reach the site immediately and ensure that relief and rescue operations are carried out quickly.
The Chief Minister also ordered that SDRF and NDRF teams be sent to assist in the rescue work and instructed officials to provide proper medical care to the injured.
Railway authorities have urged passengers to always use designated foot over bridges or subways to cross tracks and avoid taking dangerous shortcuts that could lead to accidents.
