School Admission Rules Changed: New admission criteria for Delhi schools released, see here
Delhi School Admission News: Admission rules for schools in the national capital, Delhi, are changing. Parents looking to enroll their child in any class, from nursery to Grade 1, should be aware of the new rules.
Delhi Nursery Admission New Rule: The Delhi government’s Directorate of Education (DoE) has decided to restructure the foundational stage and implement a uniform age of 6+ for admission to Class 1, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This change will be implemented in a phased manner from the 2026-27 academic session. Parents should stay informed about these changes so that their children’s admission is not affected.
Understand the Changes in Admission Age
The new structure and age criteria are as follows:
- Nursery (Kindergarten 1 / Pre-School 1): 3+ to 4 years
- Lower KG (Kindergarten 2 / Pre-School 2): 4+ to 5 years
- Upper KG (Kindergarten 3 / Pre-School 3): 5+ to 6 years
Class 1: 6+ to 7 years
The child’s age must be based on the above formula as of March 31st of the year in which they are seeking admission.
When will the new rules be implemented?
The new age criteria will be implemented in a phased manner from the 2026-27 academic session. The uniform age rule of 6+ years for Class 1 will be fully implemented from the 2028-29 academic session.
Impact on Current Students
The new age criteria will not apply to existing students enrolled in Nursery, KG, or Class 1 in the 2025-26 academic session. All currently enrolled students will be promoted as per the existing pattern.
Age Relaxation Provision
The Head of School (HoS) can relax both the minimum and maximum age limits for admission from Nursery to Class 1 by up to one month.
Transfer from other recognized schools
Students who have passed the previous class from a recognized school and have a valid School Leaving Certificate (SLC) and marksheet will be exempted from the age criteria for admission to the next higher class.

Introduction of Lower KG and Upper KG
Lower KG (Kindergarten 2) will commence from the academic session 2027-28.
Upper KG (Kindergarten 3) will also commence from the academic session 2027-28.
Advice for Parents
All school heads have been instructed to clearly inform parents about these changes. Parents are advised to read the circulars and notices issued by schools and attend meetings convened by the schools to avoid any confusion regarding their children’s admission.
The objective of the restructuring of primary classes is to align the admission age and foundational stage in Delhi schools with the NEP 2020. This will ensure equal admission ages across all types of schools and implement a uniform 5-year foundational learning framework (3 years of preschool + 2 years of primary classes).
