Cop’s death turns out to be suicide due to drug overdose

The Ludhiana (rural) police have launched a hunt for a woman and her mother who had been booked at the Sudhar police station for allegedly abetting the suicide of a policeman.

The suspects were identified as Daljit Kaur, victim’s wife, and her mother Lakhwinder Kaur, residents of Alawala village in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand.

The victim, Baljit Singh Bomb, had died by suicide due to drug overdose while doing his duty at the gate of the upcoming Halwara airport on Wednesday.

He was found lying unconscious by passers-by on the fateful day and was declared dead by doctors at a private hospital in Sudhar. Initially, he was taken to a government dispensary at Aaittiana village, from where he was referred to the hospital.

While earlier it was believed that Baljit had died due to some heart-related ailment while performing duty, recovery of a suicide note by his parents on Thursday pointed out that he had allegedly died by suicide as he was depressed due to the separation from his wife and son for over four years.

In the suicide note, Baljit had alleged that he was forced to take the extreme step by his wife and mother-in-law, who did not allow him to meet his son Arpanjot Singh for around four years.

All meetings held in the presence of elderly persons of both sides had proved futile, which resulted in persistent tension for the deceased who allegedly took overdose of some drug, it said.

Sudhar SHO Gurdeep Singh said an FIR had been registered against Daljit Kaur and Lakhwinder Kaur on the statement of Charanjit Kaur, the victim’s mother, of Bandala Nau Bomba village under the Zira subdivision in Ferozepur on Thursday, adding that police teams had been dispatched to Uttarakhand for their arrest.

The body of the deceased was handed over to his family after autopsy.
