Indian Railways liquor policy: Carrying alcohol bottles allowed in trains? Rules say…

Indian Railways Liquor Policy: Train travel is one of the most convenient and cheapest modes of transport in India. Trains connect almost all remote parts of the country. Indian Railways is continuously upgrading its trains and taking several measures to make travel more convenient for passengers. People also prefer to travel by train because of the higher luggage allowance compared to buses or flights. But what about liquor? Passengers always ask how many liquor bottles a person can carry while travelling by train.

As ticket bookings for the new year and Christmas holidays have started, passengers should know about Indian Railways’ policy on liquor or how much liquor a passenger is permitted to carry on trains.

Notably, the Indian Railways rules regarding liquor is different from those applicable in road and air travel. According to a report by Indianexpress, citing a senior railway official, carrying alcohol bottles (sealed or not sealed) on trains is strictly prohibited.

“No, carrying liquor or alcohol bottles is not allowed in trains,” the Indianexpress quoted the official as saying.

It means that passengers are not allowed to carry liquor bottles on trains.

Carrying or drinking alcohol on trains can be dangerous and can also lead to unruly behaviour and discomfort for other passengers, the railways had said.

As per network a report by Network18, the Indian Railways doesn’t have specific rules about alcohol but state laws on its transport are important. Whether a passenger can carry liquor bottles on a train depends on the regulations of the state the passenger is travelling. Each state has its own excise laws that can differ greatly.

If both states don’t have a liquor ban policy and alcohol is legally available, a passenger generally doesn’t need to worry. Generally, one passenger is allowed to carry one or two liquor bottles (750ml per bottle).
