High Alert in Philippines as super typhoon Fung Wong to hit country tonight, 100000 people evacuated

Super Typhoon Fung Wong: As Super Typhoon Fung-Wong is set to hit the Philippines on Sunday evening, a high alert has been sounded across several parts of the country. The authorities have evacuated more than 100,000 people across the eastern and northern regions. The super typhoon is expected to unleash torrential rains, destructive winds, and storm surges. Storm alert signals, with the highest warning (Signal No. 5), have been hoisted across several parts of the country, including southeastern Luzon, Catanduanes, and the coastal areas of Camarines Norte and Camarines Sur.

What Did Philippines’ Meteorological Department Say?

The weather department has issued a warning that the super typhoon is expected to bring strong winds, torrential rain. The Met Department also warned of storm surges that can reach up to 3 metres.

The super typhoon hit the Philippines’ eastern coast region with winds at a speed of 205kmph. The high-speed winds also caused flooding and storm surges in Catanduanes and adjoining regions.

Fung Wong is expected to make landfall over Isabela’s southern part and the northern portion of Aurora Sunday night or early Monday.

Typhoon Kalmaegi

As many as 200 people were killed after Typhoon Kalmaegi struck the country last week. The typhoon then moved to Vietnam after devastating Philippines. There, it killed five people.

Alert Issued

As per the Philippine National Police, all units are on high alert and are fully prepared to respond to emergencies.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr announced a state of emergency on Thursday, which remains in effect.

Notably, super typhoon Fung Wong approached the Philippines days after the Asian country was battered by Typhoon Kalmaegi. The typhoon left a trail of destruction behind it before hitting Vietnam.
