Tamil Nadu mother, lesbian partner arrested after husband alledges they killed 5-month-old baby

Police in Tamil Nadu arrested a woman and her lesbian partner for allegedly murdering the former’s five-month-old baby. The arrests were made after the child’s father alleged that the infant may not have died of natural causes and that it could have been a killing.
The incident took place in Chinnati village in Krishnagiri district on November 5. The child was believed to have died while being breastfed. He was taken to the Kelamangalam Government Hospital and declared dead. A case of unnatural death was registered; however, the police did not carry out a post-mortem. The child was later buried on the family’s agricultural land.
Shortly after, the father of the child, Suresh, alleged that his son was killed by Bharati and her partner, Sumithra, 22. He said that the Bharati killed the child by suffocating him while he and other family members were at work.
Suresh, 38, and Bharati, 25, also have two daughters, aged four and five.
Suresh checked Bharati’s phone and discovered her text messages that implicated both her and her partner. He then made a formal complaint to the police and also handed over a recording of a phone conversation where Bharati allegedly confessed to the killing. He suspected that the child had been killed after the baby created pressure in her relationship with Sumithra.
Police then exhumed the body this week for a post-mortem, and investigations revealed death by smothering and strangulation.
Bharati and Sumithra have been in a relationship for the past three years, according to police sources. The couple, however, could not spend time together after Bharati gave birth to her third child, which allegedly led to the murder.
During interrogation, the woman told officers that the she did not want her husband’s child and that her husband did not take care of her.
The two were produced before a court and are remanded in judicial custody.
The Kelamangalam Police are conducting more investigations.
