Panjab University LIVE: Students’ protest over Senate elections turn violent

Student protestors entered Panjab University through Gate No. 1 on Monday, clashing with police and reportedly taking their canes.

The campus was heavily guarded, with barricades and buses deployed, following a call for a ‘PU Bandh’ demanding notification of Senate elections.

Student leaders accused the administration and police of using force to suppress mobilisation, calling the security measures “undemocratic and illegal.”

Prominent leaders, including Punjab Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian and Congress leaders Partap Singh Bajwa and Rana Gurjeet Singh, visited the dharna site.

The protests were triggered by the Centre’s overhaul of PU, which has caused ongoing political tensions in Punjab and Chandigarh, even after the rollback of controversial changes.
