Flights Cancelled: The impact of the longest government shutdown in America is now being felt on flights as well. On Sunday, November 9, airlines cancelled 2,800 flights, while more than 10,200 flights were delayed. Passengers faced a lot of inconvenience during this time.
According to Reuters, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has warned of a worsening situation before the Thanksgiving holiday. Thanksgiving is one of the most important holidays in America, which falls on November 27 this year. Millions of students usually travel on this day.
Third Day of Flight Reductions
This problem has arisen due to a shortage of air traffic control staff. This was the third day of government-ordered flight reductions.
The US Senate voted late Sunday night to advance a bill to end the government shutdown, leading to a rise in US airline stocks before the market opens on Monday, November 10.
United Airlines led the way in pre-market trading, rising 1.9 percent, followed by Delta and American Airlines, both up 1.4 percent, while Alaska Air added 1%.
US Shutdown Impacts Flights
According to Reuters, the Federal Aviation Administration has ordered a 4 percent reduction in daily flights at 40 major airports starting Friday due to air traffic control safety concerns. This reduction will increase to 6 percent on Tuesday and then 10 percent by November 14.
American Airlines urged the Senate to expedite the bill, saying that federal aviation employees have not been paid for 40 days and that its customers are facing delays and cancellations due to the government shutdown.
