New Saudi labour laws: Overtime cuts and enhanced worker rights introduced

Saudi Arabia has decided to cancel overtime allowance for seven jobs in the health care sector, according to reports. A circular sent in this regard by the Kingdom’s Health Ministry stipulated the suspension of overtime work allowance and wage distribution to them.

Overtime benefits are being discontinued for Medical Statistics Technicians, Home Healthcare Assistants, Administrative Assistants, Drivers, Security Guards, Messengers, and Contract Workers, according to media reports.

The decision is based on the Royal Court circular regarding the cabinet's implementation of the reorganization of allowances and financial benefits. The new decision will come into effect from next month.

Instructions to improve
worker’s rights

The Saudi Labor Department has issued new directives to strengthen workers' rights.  These directives impose strict regulations on working hours, rest periods, and weekly holidays. The measure is aimed at ensuring the rights of workers.

The circular has also warned against forcing workers to be present on weekly holidays  for extra money. The law explicitly mandates full rest for workers and stipulates that  workers should not stay at the workplace for more than 12 hours a day. This regulation  prioritizes the health and safety of workers.

Employees will not be allowed to work for more than 5 consecutive hours. A mandatory minimum 30-minute rest period for prayer and meals has also been introduced during working hours.
