PAN-Aadhaar linking: If you haven’t yet linked your PAN card to your Aadhaar card, be careful. According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes, those who don’t link their PAN with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025, their PAN card will become inoperative, i.e., deactivated, from January 1, 2026. This will directly impact your income tax returns, refunds, and many other financial matters.
In such a situation, let us tell you today how your PAN card will be deactivated if you do not link your PAN with Aadhaar by December 31st, and what is the complete process for linking your PAN card with Aadhaar.
Why is PAN-Aadhaar linking necessary, and when has the deadline been extended?
A PAN card is a 10-digit unique code issued by the Income Tax Department. Through this, the tax department tracks all financial transactions, tax payments, and income tax returns of an individual. The Aadhaar card is a unique identification number issued by the government. Linking the two maintains transparency in the tax system and prevents fake PANs or tax evasion. The government has already extended the deadline for PAN-Aadhaar linking several times to give people time to complete the process. Currently, December 31, 2025, has been set as the deadline. Those who do not link their PAN-Aadhaar by this date will have their PAN cards deactivated from January 1, 2026.
What problems can arise if your PAN is not linked to Aadhaar?
If you don’t link your PAN with your Aadhaar by December 31st, your PAN will become inoperative from the next day. After that, you won’t be able to file or verify your ITR. Pending refunds won’t be issued, and TDS/TCS credits won’t be reflected in Form 26AS. Failure to link your PAN with Aadhaar will result in higher tax deduction rates, and share trading or new investments will be prohibited. Although your PAN will be reactivated after linking, it will take at least 30 days. According to the Income Tax Department, all individual taxpayers, whether registered or not, can link their PAN with Aadhaar online. However, residents of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya, NRIs, citizens aged 80 years or older, and foreign nationals are exempted from linking.
