Srinagar, Nov 12: The Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation (NLCO) today called for the formal handing over of Anchar Lake to the Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) for its dedicated conservation, management, and scientific rejuvenation.
Chairman of NLCO, Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo, met the Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department (H&UDD), to discuss the ongoing restoration of Gilsar-Khushalsar lakes and submitted a follow-up communication seeking expedited measures for their conservation.
During the meeting, Wangnoo stressed that the Anchar Lake needs to be brought under LCMA’s control to ensure focused and professional management.
The concept of developing a ‘Tourism Village’ around the twin lakes was also discussed in the meeting, NLCO said.
“The idea aims to promote community-based tourism, eco-restoration, and livelihood generation for local residents.”
NLCO said that the Secretary, H&UDD, assured continued support for strengthening scientific and sustained restoration measures through a coordinated approach involving LCMA and other concerned departments.
“It is the need of the hour that Anchar Lake is given to LCMA. It will ensure its conservation and save it from the degradation it is currently facing,” Wangnoo told Excelsior.
NLCO said that it is committed to working collaboratively with the administration and local stakeholders to restore and protect Srinagar’s urban water bodies.
“It happens while integrating sustainable tourism and community participation for long-term ecological and economic stability,” NLCO said.
