Miss Universe 2025: The ongoing Miss Universe pageant in Thailand is moving forward steadily after initial controversy. Beauty queens from around the world are representing their countries in this competition. Roma Riaz from Pakistan is also participating.
Roma Riaz is from Lahore, a city in Pakistan’s Punjab province, but was raised in Britain. She also models.
Roma, 27, has taken the platform of this international beauty pageant held in Thailand as an opportunity to challenge the perceived beauty standards established in South Asia, for which she is facing trolling in her own country, Pakistan.

Pakistani trolls have been commenting on her complexion, weight, her upbringing abroad, and even her religion. Some say she doesn’t fit the typical image of a Pakistani beauty queen. Roma has now responded to these criticisms. She shared a video on her Instagram in which she says, “Why is it so hard for people to believe that there are fair-skinned people in Britain and dark-skinned people in Pakistan? Both are beautiful in their own way.”
Roma shared a video on her Instagram in which she said, “I constantly hear that I don’t look Pakistani because of my skin color. People are constantly commenting on my skin color. Some people think that I shouldn’t be in this competition because of my skin color, whereas this skin color is the color of my country’s soil. My skin color is the same as that of the women of our country, who build our homes and hold our country in their hearts.”

UAE newspaper Khaleej Times quoted Roma as saying, “Being fair doesn’t equate to being beautiful. People are more concerned with a person’s appearance than their qualities. I don’t follow beauty pageants, but I know they don’t hold themselves to any specific beauty standards.”
She said, “It’s a surreal feeling to be on stage as a woman who looks like me. Like my body type and skin color. So I’m so happy. I want to remind people that when they come online and comment about my body, I want to ask them, will the next Miss Universe be chosen to be a top model or will she be chosen to inspire, develop, and empower other women?”
