The National Investigation Agency (NIA), probing the November 10 Delhi blast and the Faridabad terror module, has arrested an MBBS student from West Bengal for his suspected links with terror outfits.
The accused has been identified as Janisur Alam, a resident of Ludhiana in Punjab with ancestral roots in Konal village near Dalkhola in West Bengal's Uttar Dinajpur district.
He was arrested from the Surjapur Bazar area on Friday morning while returning from a wedding ceremony.
According to police, Alam is a student of Haryana’s Al-Falah University in Faridabad, which is at the centre of a major investigation after three doctors linked to the institution were arrested during a recent anti-terrorism raid.
Nearly 3,000 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, potassium chlorate and sulphur were seized, and nine people were arrested during the raids conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Haryana Police.
"The youth is a medical student of Haryana's Al-Falah University. He had travelled to his ancestral home with his mother and sister to attend a relative's wedding. Officers of the NIA intercepted him on his way back after tracking his movements through mobile-tower location data," an officer told PTI news agency.
"A few days ago, there was a wedding in the family, and Nisar had come home to attend the event," he said, adding that they were suspecting his involvement in activities related to the recent Delhi blast case.
The investigators are, however, yet to establish whether Alam had any direct connection with the blast, which claimed 13 lives after a slow-moving car exploded near the Red Fort.
Media reports said Alam was seen loitering suspiciously near a station before being detained. He also allegedly tried to escape during interrogation, following which he was taken into custody.
