Delhi Air Pollution: Breathing is becoming difficult in Delhi-NCR, neurologist tells 5 ways to avoid toxic air

Delhi Air Pollution: The air in Delhi-NCR is becoming more toxic day by day. People are inhaling the toxicity of pollution with every breath. In such a situation, you can keep yourself and your family safe by following some simple tips recommended by doctors.

Delhi Air Pollution: The air quality in North India, especially Delhi-NCR, is very poor. Pollution levels in many areas have reached the ‘severe’ category, meaning extremely dangerous. Therefore, it’s crucial that you and your family take necessary steps to protect yourself from this toxic air.

In a recent Instagram post, AIIMS trained neurologist Dr. Rahul Chaula shared five ways to avoid Delhi’s harmful air. He said, “While Beijing reduced its AQI from 754 in 2013 to just 47 in 2025, Delhi’s air quality is getting worse every winter. Schools are closing, visibility is low, and people are breathing toxic air. Delhi is turning into a ‘gas chamber.’ If the first lockdown was for COVID, the next one may be for the air.”

Let’s explore how the people of Delhi-NCR can protect themselves from this toxic air.

1. Stay indoors as much as possible

Dr. Chaula recommends staying indoors as much as possible and keeping doors and windows closed. If you want fresh air inside, open the windows briefly between 1 and 3 pm, when the sun is shining. When cleaning the house, use a damp cloth instead of a dry cloth to prevent dust. Also, avoid burning incense sticks, agarbatti, or anything else that produces smoke inside the house.

2. Remember to wear an N95 mask when going out

Generally, avoid leaving the house without any urgent work. If you must, always wear an N95 mask. Dr. Chaula recommends avoiding the elderly and children from leaving the house in the morning and evening. Exercise at home, such as yoga, climbing stairs, and working out on a treadmill or bicycle.

3. Use an Air Purifier

If possible, install a good quality air purifier suitable for your room size. This will keep the indoor air clean and breathable.

4. Work from Home

If you are working, try to get a work-from-home offer from your company for a while. This will help you avoid breathing polluted air.

5. Move out of Delhi for a while

Dr. Chaula says that if you can financially and professionally, move out of Delhi for a few weeks, as the city has now become a gas chamber. Keeping yourself and your family safe is crucial.

Also, eat foods rich in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids, such as fruits, green leafy vegetables, and walnuts. These foods strengthen immunity and maintain overall health. Drinking enough water daily and getting enough sleep also strengthens the lungs.
