New flights: The country’s financial capital, Mumbai, received a major air gift last month in the form of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). Although no flights have yet commenced from here, the eagerly awaited arrival of ordinary travelers will soon be realized. Navi Mumbai International Airport is set to open to passengers on December 25th. This new journey, beginning on Christmas Day, will not only strengthen the air connectivity of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region but also open the way for a new operational hub for airlines. From this date, two major airlines, IndiGo and Akasa Air, will begin operating from here.

Akasa Air Flights

Akasa Air will begin its operations from Navi Mumbai International Airport in a phased manner starting December 25th. The first flight will operate between Delhi and Navi Mumbai. Following this, the airline will begin services to Goa, Kochi, and Ahmedabad in the coming days. The airline stated that it will increase its domestic and international flights from Navi Mumbai Airport to 300 and 50 international flights per week. Additionally, there are plans to establish 10 bases by FY2027, including international expansion to the Middle East and South-East Asia. Akasa Air co-founder and CCO Praveen Iyer said Navi Mumbai International Airport will further strengthen the airline’s presence in western India and help attract new passengers and new route demand.

IndiGo to connect 10 cities

On the same day, IndiGo will also launch services from Navi Mumbai International Airport. The airline announced that it will connect Navi Mumbai to 10 cities simultaneously. These include Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Nagpur, Jaipur, Kochi, Mangaluru, and North Goa (Mopa). IndiGo stated that Navi Mumbai Airport, by sharing the workload of the old Mumbai Airport, will help meet the growing air travel needs in Western India.

Inaugurated last month

The first phase of Navi Mumbai International Airport was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 8. Spread over 1,160 hectares, the first phase of this modern airport, built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, includes a terminal and a runway with an annual capacity of 20 million passengers.
