THIS Indian city has the most polluted air in the world; it is not Delhi, Gurugram, or Bengaluru; name is…
Pollution has become a hot topic all around the world. With some shocking statistics and figures, people keep questioning the causes and reasons resulting in thick layers of pollutants. Now, the World Air Quality Report 2024 has come out. It was released by the Swiss firm IQAir and includes an Indian city as the most polluted one in the world. What’s even more shocking is that it’s not Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Mumbai or Bengaluru.
Which is the most polluted city in the world?
According to the Swiss IQAir’s World Air Quality Report 2024, the most polluted city in the world is Byrnihat. It lies on the border of Meghalaya and Assam. It is spread over an area of almost 49.5 square kilometres and is home to more than 40 factories. These industries release heavy loads of particulate matter in the air.
Why is Byrnihat the most polluted city in the world?
Byrnihat, located on the Meghalaya-Assam border, is the most polluted city because it consists of multiple cement, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. In addition, it lacks an authority for pollution control in the region. The main one lies in Shillong but is almost 70 kilometres away from Byrnihat.
CM Conrad K Sangma
The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, on Tuesday mentioned that it’s quite disturbing to see the town has come to be the most polluted city in the world. He added that the authorities and government are taking actions to curb the situation.
The deteriorating air quality poses a major threat to the life existing in the town. It may cause several respiratory ailments, skin issues, and lung problems. In addition, the poor air quality index affects the biodiversity of the region.
CM Conrad K. Sangma stated that seven industrial units have been shut down in the town so far.
