Udhampur hosts Asmita athletic league

UDHAMPUR, Nov 19: Udhampur district hosted the Asmita Athletic League, a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Athletic Federation of India (AFI). The event featured Under-14 and Under-16 girls, promoting athletic talent and competitive spirit.
Saloni Rai, Deputy Commissioner Udhampur, graced the opening ceremony as chief guest. Around 350 young athletes participated, reflecting Udhampur’s growing emphasis on women-led sports development. Sunil Sharma, President, Athletic Association Udhampur, welcomed the chief guest and highlighted the district’s selection as one of only two in the Union Territory to host the league.
Saloni Rai stressed sports’ role in physical fitness, mental well-being, and encouraging a drug-free lifestyle under the Nasha Mukt Bharat initiative.
The closing ceremony, presided over by MLA Udhampur West, Pawan Kumar Gupta, praised the athletes’ talent, discipline, and resilience. The event’s smooth execution was supported by DYSSO Udhampur and manager , sports council Suraj Bhan, demonstrating Udhampur’s dedication to nurturing young talent and empowering girls through sports.
