New Delhi: A sudden earthquake jolted the ongoing Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka on Friday, forcing the match to be halted. Players and spectators were startled by the unexpected event, and chaos reigned on the field.
Natural Disaster Strikes During Match
When play was halted, Ireland were at 165/5. Cricket Ireland posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Oh my God… Play has been halted due to an earthquake.” The incident occurred after the field, as well as the commentary box, felt tremors.
Earthquake Epicenter and Intensity
According to reports, the earthquake struck at around 10:08 am (IST), with a magnitude of 5.7. The epicenter was located 13 km north-northwest of Dhaka, near Narsingdi, at a shallow depth of approximately 10 km. The tremor was also felt in eastern Indian states bordering Bangladesh, but no major damage was immediately reported.
Panic in Dhaka
Several buildings in Dhaka began shaking, prompting people to rush out of their homes and buildings. There were also reports of some temporary structures collapsing. According to witnesses, many people ran out into the streets in panic during the earthquake.
Players on the field continued playing, camera started shaking
Surprisingly, the players on the field were initially unaware of the tremors and continued playing. On the fifth ball of the sixth over, the front camera suddenly began shaking rapidly, but the batsman defended the ball and hit a four on the next ball. Play was immediately halted and resumed after a safety review.
