Cuttack double murder: Son allegedly kills parents over financial dispute

The Twin City Commissionerate Police arrested a man after his father and stepmother were found stabbed to death inside their home at the Old Jail Colony under Dargha Bazar police limits in Cuttack on Friday. Police said preliminary investigation points to a financial dispute as the likely trigger behind the double murder.

According to sources, the deceased were identified as Deepak Kumar Das, an employee of the Choudwar Jail, and his wife, Rita Rani Das. Both were found with multiple stab wounds and lying in a pool of blood inside their residence. Officers from Dargha Bazar police station detained their son, Alok Kumar Das, at the spot on suspicion of murder.

Police officials said Alok did not attempt to flee and was found sitting inside the house when they arrived. A bloodstained knife, alleged to have been used in the attack, was seized from the location.

Confrontation Allegedly Linked to Money

Reports stated that the accused allegedly had an ongoing dispute with his father over money and a property-related payment. Family members told investigators that Deepak had allegedly given Rs 10 lakh to Alok in the past, and disagreements over repayment had intensified in recent months. Alok had reportedly been living separately from his wife.

Investigators suspect that the confrontation inside the Old Jail Colony residence escalated after Alok arrived at around 9 pm, demanding more money. Officers said both victims suffered repeated knife wounds to the neck, chest and abdomen.

The couple’s bodies were sent to SCB Medical College & Hospital for post-mortem. Police are investigating whether any other person may have had prior knowledge of the attack or was involved in the financial dispute.

Wife Claims Husband Threatened to ‘End Agony’

The accused’s wife told media persons that her husband had been “under mental agony for the past several months” and had recently travelled to Pipili for a land-related issue. She said she rushed to the location after he informed her that he would “end all of this agony.”

“He did not return any money taken from them (his parents). He told me he was going to end all of this agony. When I reached here, he was sitting after committing the murder,” she said.

“A couple was murdered by their son. Their nephew informed us of the matter. We reached the spot and recovered two dead bodies. An investigation is on,” informed Girija Shankar Chakraborty, ACP, Zone-II.

As of the last reports, police are questioning Alok to understand whether the attack was premeditated and if anyone else was aware of his intentions. Police are also verifying recent property transactions, financial records and phone communications.
