Bhopal: Woman Wants Divorce As Hubby Reneges On Promise To Settle In Town After Marriage

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): A woman has decided to divorce her husband, for he has reneged on his promise to settle in a town after the marriage.

She has filed cases under Section 498A of the IPC and Section 125 of the CrPC against her husband in the Bhopal District Family Court. They have been living separately since 2024.

They had married in 2022 with the consent of their parents. The woman was born and brought up in a village in a neighbouring district of Bhopal where her father does farming. T

he man, a pharmacy graduate, also hails from a village in another district of Madhya Pradesh.

The woman told her counsellor at the court Shail Awasthi that at the time of the marriage, her husband had promised that he would open a chemist shop in a town and they would live there. She, however, found that he was in no mood to keep his promise after marriage. He joined his father’s business of selling pujan samagri.

The woman says that when she reminded her mother-in-law of the promise, she was told that “Lying is common in marriage negotiations.”

After that it became clear to her that she would have to live in the village all her life, the woman walked out of her hubby’s home and shifted to Bhopal, where her brother and his family lives.

Her brother is in a private job while her sister-in-law is a government servant. The woman then filed cases against her husband, alleging torture over dowry claiming that he was demanding Rs 40 lakh.

The husband, however, does not want to end the marriage. He told the counsellor that he had agreed to the union only because the woman was from a rural area.

“I thought that she is used to village life and it won’t be difficult for her to adjust in her matrimonial home in a rural area,” he said. The woman, however, is sure of what she wants. “Mere saare sapne bikhar gaye hain (all my dreams are shattered),” she told the counsellor.
