BJD’s Persistent Demand for Caste Census Succeeds as Union Cabinet Approves Inclusion of Caste Enumeration in Upcoming Census

Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal President and Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly Naveen Patnaik has hailed the Union Cabinet’s decision to include caste enumeration in the forthcoming national census.
The decision aligns with the BJD’s long-standing demand for a countrywide caste-based census and the removal of the 50% cap on reservations.
“Welcome the decision of the Union Cabinet to include Caste Enumeration in the forthcoming census”, the BJD President wrote on his ‘X’ handle.
Naveen highlighted Odisha’s proactive efforts in 2023, where the state undertook concrete steps to enumerate populations from various social classes to facilitate targeted development and upliftment programs.
“The Biju Janata Dal has been repeatedly demanding countrywide caste census and removal of 50% cap on reservation. In Odisha, we also took certain concrete steps in 2023 to enumerate the number of people belonging to different classes to help us in making plans for their development and upliftment”, the BJD supremo said.
The same objectives would now be met by this decision of the Central Government to conduct a caste-based census, he added.
Reaffirming the BJD’s commitment to social justice, Naveen emphasized the party’s unwavering support for backward classes, including Scheduled Tribes (ST), Scheduled Castes (SC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC).
“We in Biju Janata Dal always stand for Social Justice, especially for backward classes such as ST, SC and OBC,” Naveen further stated.
