Ladakh hospital makes history with first permanent pacemaker implant
In a significant advancement for healthcare in the region, the Sonam Norboo Memorial (SNM) Hospital has successfully performed Ladakh’s first permanent pacemaker implant.
Former MP for Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, lauded the achievement in a statement, saying, “Congratulations to SNM District Hospital, Leh, and Dr Lotus Gyalson for successfully conducting Ladakh’s first permanent pacemaker implant. We are grateful to the entire team and the Ayushman Bharat PMJAY scheme for making quality cardiac care accessible in the region.”
In a related development, the Union Territory has received in-principle approval for the establishment of a new Medical College at Spituk Pharka, Leh, and the expansion of SNM Hospital. The estimated project cost for these initiatives is Rs 785.61 crore.
Leh Hill Council chairman Tashi Gyalson expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, for this landmark approval and conveyed special thanks to the Prime Minister.
He stated that the Central government has provided “unwavering support towards fulfilling the long-standing aspiration of the people of Ladakh.” He further noted that the establishment of the medical college and the expansion of SNM Hospital will not only enhance healthcare infrastructure in the region but also build local capacity, improve access to quality medical services, and create new opportunities for medical education for aspiring students from Ladakh.
