Leo Bypass construction handed over to BRO for speedy completion
In a significant move aimed at accelerating infrastructure development in the high-altitude border region, the strategically important Leo Bypass — linking Spiti valley in Lahaul and Spiti district with Kinnaur — has been officially handed over to the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) for speedy construction.
Lahaul and Spiti MLA Anuradha Rana, who had been actively advocating for the project’s transfer, confirmed the development.
“During the Vidhan Sabha session, I had raised the issue of the slow progress of the Leo Bypass. I had requested PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh and Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to hand over the project to the BRO. I am thankful that the Central Government considered our request, and the BRO will now take charge," the MLA said.
The project, under construction for over two decades, has faced repeated delays, frustrating locals and security officials alike. Once completed, the bypass will significantly reduce the distance between Shimla and Kaza by nearly 105 km. At present, the route spans nearly 460 km via Sumdo.
The MLA stressed the road’s national importance. “This is not just about convenience — it’s a strategic asset. It will improve military access to the border areas of Lahaul and Spiti and bolster national security,” she stated.
Residents of Spiti valley have welcomed the handover, expressing hope that the BRO will expedite construction and bring long-awaited relief to the region. They believe the BRO’s experience in handling challenging terrains and strategic roadways will ensure timely completion.
Earlier, PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh had assured the state Assembly that talks with the BRO were underway and the state government was pursuing formal approval from the Centre.
With the BRO now at the helm, hopes are high that the Leo Bypass will finally see completion, enhancing connectivity, boosting defense preparedness, and opening new opportunities for the local population.
