Israel battles worst wildfires in a decade, Netanyahu declares national emergency as flames grow closer to…

Jerusalem: Israel is currently grappling with one of the most devastating wildfires in its history, which has scorched approximately 3,000 acres of land. In response to the escalating situation, authorities have implemented a ban on visitors to all national parks and forests, and have closed the national highway that connects Tel Aviv to Jerusalem to ensure public safety.

Netanyahu declares national emergency amid crisis

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared the situation a “national emergency,” emphasising the potential threat posed by shifting winds. He warned, “The western wind can easily push the fire toward the outskirts of (Jerusalem), and even into the city itself,” underscoring the urgency of the crisis.

Independence Day celebrations dampened by disaster

The wildfire’s timing has coincided tragically with the celebrations of Israel’s Independence Day, leading to the cancellation of public festivities. Organisers had to resort to recording events in advance and subsequently screening them for citizens, a stark shift from the usual vibrant celebrations.

Firefighters brave harsh conditions

As of May 1, there have been no reported fatalities. However, firefighting teams have been actively engaged in battling the blaze and have treated 19 individuals for light injuries related to smoke inhalation and minor burns. The firefighters face a challenging environment, combating strong winds and dry conditions that exacerbate the dispersal of flames and smoke throughout the region.
