UPI New guidelines: Now UPI payment will take 50 percent less time than before, new guidelines issued

New guidelines have been issued by NPCI, in which it has been said that now the payment speed should be increased. The payment which used to take 30 seconds earlier, will now take 15 seconds.

New guidelines have been issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which will benefit UPI users. From June 16, 2025, UPI transactions (based on both debit cards and credit cards) will now take only 15 seconds. Earlier it used to take 30 seconds. The new mandate changes the API response time for different financial and non-financial UPI activities.

NPCI has directed all UPI network partners, such as banks and third party apps (PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm etc.) to make technical improvements in their systems to make the processing speed of transactions even faster. End-users will get the direct benefit of this improvement and now payments can be made quickly.

NPCI has directed banks and third party UPI apps to update their systems in such a way that all types of UPI transactions, whether debit card based or credit card based, can now be completed within just 15 seconds. UPI transaction time reduced to 15 seconds While earlier up to 30 seconds were allowed for transaction processing, now it has been halved.

Changes in API response time

The API response time has been updated for all financial (such as payments, transfers) and non-financial (such as balance checks, PIN changes) UPI activities. All banks and payment apps will be required to comply with the new timeline standards, otherwise action can be taken against them.

What will UPI users get?

1. Fast and reliable experience:

Reducing the time taken in transactions will give users an instant payment experience, which will be convenient especially in shops, malls and online shopping.

2. Low failure rate:

When transactions are completed faster, problems like failure or time out will also be reduced.

3. Relief during rush hours:

This faster speed will prove beneficial during festive seasons, holidays or sales when there is more traffic.

Responsibility of banks and apps

NPCI has asked all UPI partners to upgrade their infrastructure and API gateways so that:

– There is no delay in the network,

– The system capacity is high,

– And the user gets service without any interruption.

If a bank or app is unable to process transactions within the stipulated limit, action can be taken against it.

This move of NPCI will give more momentum to India’s digital economy. More than 1,200 crore transactions are already taking place every month through UPI in the country. In such a situation, reduction in transaction processing time is a major technological improvement, which will take India even faster towards ‘cashless’ and ‘fast payment economy’.
