Stay hydrated in summer, say experts

Considering the rising temperatures and heat in the region and the whole country, the district Health Department has issued an advisory for the general people to save themselves from the hot and dry wind blowing during the daytime.

The day temperature, which is hovering around 40 degrees Celsius these days, is expected to go up further in the

coming days.

Health experts have advised the residents to avoid going out of their homes, especially during the afternoon.

Civil Surgeon Dr Kirandeep Kaur said it is also important for the residents to be aware of heat stroke symptoms and methods to cope with it. “The residents should increase the intake of fluids such as lassi, water and lemon water. They should avoid drinking carbonated drinks,” she said. She further stated that fried and fast foods must be avoided to stay healthy.

The Civil Surgeon said the prevailing weather conditions are expected to continue and as such the residents should take ample precautions. She said people should also wear light-coloured clothes and cover their heads with a cloth or a

cap to reduce the chances of heat stroke.

The health experts said children, elderly and pregnant women should take more precautions as they can be affected more by hot weather conditions.

The official said skin rashes, confusion, profuse sweating, tiredness, headache, vomiting, dry and red coloured skin are the symptoms of heat stress.

In all these conditions, the person should sit in shade and rest, she

suggested.

The prevailing hot weather conditions have already started impacting public life in the city as roads look deserted in the afternoon.

The residents stated that as compared to last week, the temperature has suddenly increased during the past few days and it is becoming unbearable.
