JAMMU, May 2: AIIMS Jammu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), Jaipur – the world’s largest organization providing artificial limbs and assistive devices free of cost – to establish a permanent Jaipur Foot Centre at its premises.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Prof (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director and CEO of AIIMS Jammu; Ambassador Satish Mehta, president of BMVSS; and other senior officials and faculty members.
The collaboration aims to serve persons with locomotor disabilities, particularly from the Jammu region, where access to advanced prosthetic care remains limited. As per Census 2011, over 58,000 people in Jammu and Kashmir were reported with movement-related disabilities, a number likely to have increased since.
Founded in 1975 by Padma Bhushan awardee Dr Devendra Raj Mehta, BMVSS is globally known for developing and distributing the Jaipur Foot – a low-cost, highly functional artificial limb. The organization has transformed the lives of over 2.4 million people across India and 44 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America through free prosthetic and orthotic aid.
The upcoming Jaipur Foot Centre at AIIMS Jammu will manufacture and fit prosthetic limbs, calipers, and mechanical hands onsite. Using time-tested designs and innovative technology, it will offer same-day or rapid-turnaround fittings, especially for lower limb prosthetics – all completely free of cost.
Under the MoU, AIIMS Jammu will provide accessible space, medical support, and essential infrastructure, while BMVSS will install the required equipment and deploy trained technicians to manage operations.
“This centre is a step toward inclusive healthcare. It will ensure that no Divyang is left behind due to lack of affordability or access,” said Dr Shakti Kumar Gupta while Ambassador Satish Mehta reaffirmed BMVSS’s commitment to providing dignified rehabilitation free of charge.
The centre is expected to become operational soon, marking a significant milestone in AIIMS Jammu’s mission to offer comprehensive and compassionate care.
