After early elimination MS Dhoni’s CSK takes big step, call India’s fastest T20 centurion Urvil Patel for mid season trials
New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK), led by MS Dhoni, invited Urvil Patel, known for his record-breaking T20 century, along with Aman Khan and Salman Nizar, to participate in mid-season IPL 2025 trials. The trials, held in Chennai on April 27th and 28th, involved three players and were conducted by the five-time champions despite their elimination from the current IPL season.
Wasim Jaffer, a former Indian cricketer, reported having inside information regarding Urvil Patel’s involvement in Chennai Super Kings’ mid-season trials.
“I’ve heard, I’ve got back room news that CSK have called Urvil Patel, the guy who got a couple of hundreds in the Mushtaq Ali Trophy. I’m surprised that he was not picked by any franchise,” Jaffer said while speaking on ESPNCricinfo.
“I was surprised. Even Ayush Mhatre was picked ahead of him. He’s been asked to trial there, so I don’t know what’s cooking there,” Jaffer added.
Urvil demonstrated aggressive batting during his trial matches. His first innings yielded 41 runs from 20 balls, including two sixes. He improved upon this in his second innings, scoring a fifty from just 20 balls, hitting three sixes.
Urvil, a wicket-keeper batsman from Gujarat, impressed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) scouts during recent trials with a strong batting performance. While he previously participated in CSK trials, Ayush Mhatre, a Mumbai cricketer, ultimately secured a contract with the team.
Urvil Patel set a new record for the fastest T20 century by an Indian in the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, achieving the feat in 28 balls against Tripura. His impressive SMAT performance included 315 runs across six matches, boasting a remarkable strike rate of 229.92. Despite this success, Patel, a former Gujarat Titans player, remains unsigned by any IPL franchise, even as a replacement.
Aman Khan, an all-rounder known for his pace bowling, has prior IPL experience with the Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals. His recent Chennai trials showcased impressive power hitting, including two sixes. In contrast, Salman Nizar, a Kerala batsman, is awaiting his IPL debut. His strong performances in the recent Ranji Trophy, where Kerala reached the final, brought him to prominence.
Chennai Super Kings’ next match is against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 3rd at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
