Preserving India-Bangladesh friendship amid challenges

Sir,
Prof (Dr) D.K. Giri’s article “India-Bangladesh Ties, No Sign of Revival” (April 26) thoughtfully captures the current strains in bilateral relations.
It is unfortunate that short-term provocations and external manipulations, especially from China, are threatening decades of friendship built on shared history and sacrifices. Bangladesh must realize that aligning with Beijing could bring economic and strategic pitfalls, as seen in Sri Lanka.
India, on the other hand, must manage the situation sensitively without appearing overbearing. While firm measures like suspending transshipment facilities are necessary, engaging Dhaka diplomatically is equally important to prevent a lasting drift.
India’s long-term strategy must recognize that strong, stable neighbours are key to its own security. Restoring trust with Bangladesh will require patience, respect, and a clear-eyed view of the shifting geopolitical realities.
