Robbery case cracked in 2 hours, 1 arrested
The Chandigarh Police have arrested a habitual offender within two hours of committing a robbery at knifepoint in the Ram Darbar area.
Vijay Shankar Yadav (50), a resident of Small Flats, Maloya, was returning from a clinic in Phase 2, Ram Darbar, with his nephew Shuvhi Yadav (5) on May 2. As they reached the main road around 2.20 pm, a youth blocked their path. Brandishing a knife, he threatened the victims and forcibly snatched a gold locket from around the child’s neck and fled the spot.
An FIR under Section 309(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, was registered and the police immediately launched a manhunt.
Within two hours, the accused — identified as Sumit alias Sumita (29), a resident of Phase 2, Ram Darbar — was arrested. A knife and the stolen gold locket were recovered from his possession.
The accused, who is unemployed and has studied up to class 10, has multiple FIRs registered him previously. He had been booked on the charges of robbery, criminal intimidation, rioting, house trespass, assault, theft and even attempted murder, with cases dating from 2014 to 2017.
The operation was executed under the close guidance of SP (City) Geetanjali Khandewal and the supervision of SDPO (South) Jaswinder Singh. Sumit was produced before the court and was remanded to judicial custody.
