ATM Charges Hike: Now you will be charged more for withdrawing money from ATM, know the new RBI guideline

RBI Guidelines On ATM: RBI guidelines state that after the fixed free transactions, a maximum of Rs 23 can be charged from the customers and this will come into effect from May 1, 2025.

RBI Guidelines On ATM: A new rule regarding ATM charges has come into effect across the country from today i.e. 1 May 2025. This announcement made by the Reserve Bank of India will affect how many times you transact from your ATM every month and if you do it more than the prescribed limit, then how much will you have to pay now. RBI said in its notification, customers can do all five free transactions (financial and non-financial transactions) from their bank ATM every month. They can also do free transactions (financial and non-financial transactions) from other bank’s ATM.

Three transactions are free in metro cities while five free transactions are free from other bank’s ATM in non-metro places. RBI guidelines further state, after the fixed free transactions, a maximum of Rs 23 can be charged from the customers and this will come into effect from May 1, 2025.

In other words, the number of free ATM transactions depends on where you live. People living in metro cities can make three free transactions from other bank ATMs while those living in non-metro cities can make five free transactions from other bank ATMs. This includes both financial transactions (like withdrawing money) and non-financial ones (like checking balance or getting a mini statement). As soon as you cross this limit, the bank charges you.

From today i.e. May 1, 2025, if you use the ATM more than the free limit, then your bank can charge up to Rs 23, which was earlier being charged Rs 21. This rate will be applicable on all whether you are withdrawing money or checking the balance. This charge will also be applicable on Cash Recycler Machine (CRM), although this charge will not have to be paid on depositing money.

Many banks like HDFC, Punjab National Bank and IndusInd Bank have already informed their customers about this revised charge. HDFC Bank said that from May 2, 2025, the fee for transactions beyond the free limit will be increased to Rs 23 + applicable tax. The previous fee was Rs 21 + tax.
