'India's Film Industry Will Collapse': Vivek Agnihotri Calls Donald Trump's 100% Movie Tariff 'Threat', Urges Filmmakers To 'Unite & Fight'
As US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of 100 per cent tariff on all movies releasing in the US that are made out of the country, filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri stated that it is a threat to India's film industry, and that the already struggling industry might collapse due to it.
"Trump's 100% tariff on movies is a disastrous move. If this absurdity prevails, India's struggling film industry will collapse entirely, with no one to save it (sic)," Agnihotri wrote.
The Kashmir Files director went on to say, "Indian film leaders must wake up, unite, and fight this threat instead of chasing paparazzi and self-glorification (sic)."
What Is Trump's 100% Movie Tariff?
For those unversed, Trump, on Monday, took to his social media to announce that a 100 per cent tariff will be imposed on each and every film releasing in the US that is made outside the country.
"The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death. Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States. Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda! (sic)," he wrote.
He further continued, "Therefore, I am authorizing the Department of Commerce, and the United States Trade Representative, to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands. WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN (sic)."
Shekhar Kapur Also Reacts To Trump's Tariff Move
Mr India filmmaker Shekhar Kapur had a different view on Trump's tariff imposition from that of Agnihotri. He stated: "Over 75% of box office of Hollywood films come from outside the US. And significant part of the budget of those films are spent outside the US (sic)."
"President Trump’s imposition of 100% tarif on all films imported into the US may encourage Hollywood to move outside the US! Quite the opposite of what he intended (sic)," he added.
