Samarvir Sahi amateur golf tourney from today

The 25th edition of the Indian Golf Union (IGU) Samarvir Sahi Amateur Golf Championship will be held at the Chandigarh Golf Club from May 6 to 9.

It is a categorised tournament by the Indian Golf Union and attracts the finest amateur golfers from across the country. The championship is in its silver jubilee year. The past winners of the tournament include some of the top golfing names of the country like Anirban Lahiri, Gaganjeet Bhullar, Khalin Joshi and Rashid Khan and many more.

“The tournament was instituted by GPS Sahi and Meenu Sahi Mamik in the memory of Samarvir Singh Sahi, popularly known as ‘Monty’, who was a fine golfer in his own right,” said Ravibir Singh Grewal, president, CGC.

Sahi did his schooling from St John’s High School, Sector 26, and Delhi Public School, Delhi, and pursued his graduation from Albright College, US. He was groomed at the Chandigarh Golf Club and was a popular figure on the golf course having won many sub-junior and junior events.

Sahi also won the Jacob Award for all-round performance at Albright College where he captained the college golf team and was awarded the Best Men’s Golf Trophy. Sahi, who played with the likes of Jeev Milkha Singh, Harmeet Kahlon and others, breathed his last at a young age in November 1994 after battling with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

Meanwhile, some of the best amateur golfing talent of the country will be present during the tournament. Among others, Umeed, Ayaan Gupta, Anshul Misra (All India Champion) and Varun Muthappa (All India Runner Up) will participate in the championship.
