Commuters hassled as 2-hour rain leaves Zirakpur roads inundated

A two-hour spell of rain and a dysfunctional drainage system spelled chaos on multiple stretches of the Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway in Zirakpur.

The stretch alongside the main market under the flyover remained submerged in 2-ft deep rainwater as long snarl of vehicles on both sides crippled life.

Vehicles remained stuck on waterlogged roads as shopkeepers watched helplessly while losing out on business.

The Patiala Chowk, Lohgarh area, Paras Downtown were some of the areas that were adversely affected by the waterlogging casued by the showers.

In the Nagla area of Zirakpur, a buffalo died of electrocution after coming in contact with bare wires roadside outside the Eskon Arena housing society.

The cattle’s owner, Rasal Singh, a resident of Singhpura Bazigar Basti, blamed Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) officials for the alleged negligence and demanded compensation. He alleged that the loose wires have been lying on the road for the past six months.

Locals, meanwhile, highlighted the presence of two private schools and two government schools are in the vicinity and the risks such wires carry.

They also slammed the PSPCL and Zirakpur Municipal Council officials for putting the life of residents in jeopardy.
