Punjabi pageantry: Diljit Dosanjh turns heads with royal sherwani, adorned with tradition and history

Diljit Dosanjh made his majestic royal debut at the Met Gala, paying respects to his culture with an ivory and gold sherwani, paired with a tehmat (draped bottoms).
He layered this with a sweeping cape embroidered with the silhouetted map of Punjab, also adorned by a feathered, jewel-studded turban with an aura of its own. He not only carried tradition, but also pieces of the past. Dressed in custom-made clothing by Prabal Gurung and styled by Abhilasha Devnani, Diljit Dosanjh surely created a sensation.
Inspired by the majestic legacy of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, he wore a diamond set by Golecha’s Jewels and a jewel-studded sword: a symbol of regal power and ferocity.
Dosanjh also wore a Nature Sauvage Tigre bracelet with piercing emerald eyes and a Panthère watch adorned with 18-carat rose gold and diamonds with a Faune et Flore de Cartier bracelet, adorned with 18-carat yellow gold in conjunction with emeralds, yellow, orange, and brown diamonds, and a Panthère de Cartier ring with emeralds, onyx, and diamonds.
This year's Met Gala, with its theme 'Tailored for You', shines a spotlight on Black style and the history of dandyism. Dosanjh broke all barriers, showcasing his pride and choice in his clothing.
“They said Punjabis can't do fashion, and I said, I will show you.” He was a global sensation who shone brightly on 'The Tonight Show' with Jimmy Fallon and delivered on this promise, once again becoming a wild sensation with his outfit at the Met Gala.
Apart from Diljit, the 2025 Met Gala also saw strong Indian representation from Shah Rukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, and Kiara Advani, as well as designers Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Manish Malhotra, and Prabal Gurung. Met Gala-regulars Natasha Poonawala and Isha Ambani were also present.
