Thane Tragedy: Ceiling Plaster Collapses In Kalwa Building; Four Family Members Injured
Four people, including two women from a family, sustained minor injuries after a portion of the ceiling plaster collapsed in a room in Kalwa on Tuesday. The injured have been identified as Priya Mahendra Kharat (24), Piyush Kharat (17), Manav Kharat (21), and Seema Kharat (45). All four were sleeping in the room when the incident occurred at 7 a.m.
Tanuja Society, a ground-plus-three-storey building that is 25 to 30 years old, has 18 rooms and is located in Kharegaon, Kalwa, Thane. The incident took place on the second floor when the ceiling plaster collapsed onto four members of the Kharat family.
Neighbours rushed to the room after hearing a loud thud and found plaster from the ceiling scattered on the floor. The injured were immediately taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, where they were treated for hand and leg injuries. All four were discharged after receiving medical assistance.
An official from the Regional Disaster Management Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) said, “We received information about the ceiling plaster collapse in a residential building and dispatched one pickup vehicle to the spot.”
Following the incident, the Assistant Municipal Commissioner, an engineer from the Public Works Department (PWD) in the Kalwa ward, and other officials visited the site to assess the situation.
Lalita Jadhav, Assistant Municipal Commissioner from TMC, said, “We rushed to the spot and inspected the room as well as the entire building. We directed the society members to conduct a structural audit of the building urgently and submit the report to the TMC. Moreover, we are requesting them to evacuate the building as soon as possible.”
During the inspection, it was found that the society members had previously asked the Kharat family to repair their room, to which the family had responded that they would do so soon.
