New Delhi: Sri Lanka Cricket has enlisted former India fielding coach R Sridhar to conduct a 10-day specialized fielding programme designed to enhance the fielding skills and overall standards of Sri Lankan players.

Sri Lanka Cricket has officially announced that former India national team fielding coach R. Sridhar will lead an intensive 10-day fielding program aimed at improving the fielding performance of Sri Lankan cricketers. The announcement was made through a media release on the SLC website.

The specialized fielding programme, set to begin on May 7, will include participants from across various levels of Sri Lankan cricket. This includes the men’s and women’s national squads, the emerging squads, premier club players, the national Under-19 team, and the women’s ‘A’ team.

R. Sridhar, a BCCI Level 3 certified coach, served as India’s fielding coach from 2014 to 2021, contributing across more than 300 matches. He played a crucial role in transforming India’s fielding unit during his tenure, which coincided with the team’s historic back-to-back Test series wins in Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21. More recently, in 2024, Sridhar also took on a brief role as assistant coach with the Afghanistan national team.

Before his tenure with the senior Indian team, R. Sridhar worked with India’s U19 squad as both a fielding and assistant coach, helping shape young talent at the grassroots level. He has also brought his expertise to franchise cricket, serving as the fielding coach for the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab), further cementing his reputation as a specialist in enhancing fielding standards.

Sridhar will kick off the programme by working closely with Sri Lanka’s national team players, focusing on core fielding techniques. Following that, he will engage with other squads, conducting skill-specific drills, advanced training sessions, and simulated match scenarios that mirror real-game situations to sharpen reflexes, coordination, and overall fielding performance across all levels.

Throughout his tenure, Sridhar will collaborate closely with the National, High Performance, and Club coaches, working in tandem to ensure that the fielding techniques and skills he imparts are effectively integrated into Sri Lanka’s existing coaching frameworks, all under the guidance of Sri Lanka Cricket.
