After Gautam Gambhir, Mohammed Shami gets death threat

Days after India head coach Gautam Gambhir got a death threat, pace spearhead Mohammed Shami, too, got a death threat via email on May 4. A ransom of ₹1 crore was demanded from the cricketer as means of settlement.

 

Following the incident, an FIR was registered by the Cyber Crime Police Station in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. The FIR was filed on Monday by Shami's brother Haseeb on the former’s behalf, under sections 308(4) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS) 2023, and sections 66d and 66e of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008. According to Shami's brother, the threat was sent from an email address belonging to an individual named Rajput Sindhar, around 2-3pm.

 

The cricketer is currently playing in the IPL 2025, for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He has taken six wickets in nine games for SRH, with a bowling average of 56.17.

 

Regarding the death threat that Gambhir got, Deputy Commissioner of Police, V. Harsha Vardhan, said: "We have been informed about an alleged threat email received on an email ID associated with Gautam Gambhir. The matter is being investigated. Gautam Gambhir is already under Delhi Police protection, and we do not comment on specific security arrangements."
